Lexaria Bioscience: A Deep Dive

Earlier this year, we published a business opportunity report on Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (Nasdaq: LEXX) (Nasdaq: LEXXW) and believe the company is flying under the radar.

The biotech company operates a licensed in-house research laboratory and holds a robust intellectual property (IP) portfolio with 28 patents granted and roughly 50 patents pending worldwide. We are bullish on the strength of the company’s IP portfolio and are favorable on how the management team continues to focus on this aspect of the business.

One of the most exciting aspects of Lexaria’s business is its DehydraTECH drug delivery platform. Based on independent studies, the drug delivery platform improves the way active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) enter the bloodstream by promoting more effective oral delivery. The company is highly focused on improving bioavailability for a variety of treatments and is currently conducting several studies on animals and humans.

Lexaria is investigating how DehydraTECH-processed CBD may benefit a wide range of patients who are suffering from debilitating conditions and we are favorable on this. From dementia to diabetes, DehydraTECH is currently in the following stages for indications which have specific unmet needs:

An Undervalued Biotech Business

In October 2021, Lexaria reported that its human clinical study HYPER-H21-4 may be the world’s first study to show a sustained drop in blood pressure (BP) in normally active hypertensive patients following multiple weeks of oral CBD therapy that used Lexaria’s patented DehydraTECH-CBD capsule formulation.

For biotech companies, valuations tend to surge higher when positive clinical trial data is reported. According to Bay Bridge Bio, typical company valuations at the start of Phase I are USD $88 million and USD $248 million at the start of Phase II. Based on these valuations, we believe Lexaria has substantial upside potential.

An Investigational New Drug (IND) enabling program is currently underway for DehydraTECH-CBD as a prospective FDA registered treatment for hypertension. Lexaria is highly focused on their IND filing for DehydraTECH-CBD as a potential registered treatment for hypertension with the FDA in 2023.

If the successful HYPER-H21-4 study was registered with the FDA, it would likely be a Phase 1B/2A study. Based on the data from Bay Bridge Bio, this would make Lexaria an extremely undervalued business and we want our readers to be aware of this.

A Company With Catalysts For Growth

From oral nicotine to epilepsy, Lexaria has several potential growth catalysts and we are bullish on the data that has already been reported. We consider Lexaria’s DehydraTECH technology to be the most important part of the business and want to provide more information to explain why we feel this way.

Lexaria’s DehydraTECH is a disruptive, patented drug delivery technology that is more effective at delivering APIs into the bloodstream and into brain tissue. The technology can be applied to multiple ingestible product formats such as tablets, capsules, oral suspensions, mouth-melts, and others even including topical skin-based delivery.

So far, the data from studies on DehydraTECH have been impressive and we consider this to be a core pillar of our bullish view on Lexaria. Pharmacokinetic (PK) studies have shown that the technology can deliver higher quantities of APIs in less time. So far, this has been proven to work for CBD for hypertension, oral nicotine for reduced-risk, phosphodiesterase inhibitors (“PDE5 inhibitors”), and antiviral drugs for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.

The DehydraTECH pipeline addresses serious unmet patient needs with substantial market potential and we find this to be significant. The technology proven to be valuable by showing that it increases bioavailability, improves the speed of onset, reduces drug administration costs, and masks unwanted tastes.

An Underappreciated Commercial Growth Story

DehydraTECH has generated interest from major multi-national conglomerates and Lexaria has been able to form licensing agreements for it with Fortune 100 companies. Going forward, the company plans to expand the commercialization process by forming licensing agreements and partnerships with other global companies and we consider this to be a testament to the efficacy of the technology.

From a commercial opportunity standpoint, Lexaria has proven its ability to form strategic relationships with Fortune 100 companies and foster new relationships. The company is actively developing lead product pipeline candidates in the following areas:

  1. CBD for hypertension and potentially heart disease
  2. Reduced risk / replacement therapy oral nicotine products
  3. Antiviral drugs

When it comes to commercial opportunities, Lexaria is focused on forming strategic relationships with companies that are interested in exploring formulation opportunities with their specific APIs of interest. The company out-licenses its technology (for up-front fees, milestone payments and/or royalty payments) and is generating revenue from CPG-destined formulations to corporate clients on a toll processing basis.

Where Does Lexaria Go From Here?

During the last few years, Lexaria has developed significantly more powerful versions of DehydraTECH-CBD which may offer even further enhanced CBD delivery topically compared to its compositions that were previously tested. We believe the technology has significantly improved following prior studies and believe the market is not assigning enough value to the advancement of the business.

At current levels, we believe that Lexaria has a compelling valuation and a favorable risk-reward profile. We are of the opinion that there is a major valuation disconnect between Lexaria and the stock market and expect this to change if positive clinical trial data is reported from the studies it is conducting.

Another reason for our bullish view on Lexaria is related to the amount of stock that is owned by the management team (including additional insider buying as recently as October, 2022). We consider this to be a testament to the strength of the business and want our readers to be aware of this.
